Blogs are an easy way to get your voice out onto the Net. For the Web-It-Yourselfer, custom blogs are a great way to learn about web technologies and create something from the ground up.

With a little bit of tech savvy anyone can create their own custom blog. When choosing blog software or a blog service consider the following:

Support -

Implementing new software will create a lot of questions. Does the software have a support site/forum? How large is the user community? Is the user community helpful?

Is it Free? -

There really is no need to pay a lot of money for either the software or a service. Free doesn’t mean cheap. There is quality, free software available.

Easy Customization -

Is the software flexible enough to allow for customization? Can the colors be changed? Can style sheets be used? Are there custom plugins available that are developed by the user community? Is there a robust set of functions that can be employed to accomplish simple tasks? For example, some software offers one simple function that will produce a long list of links. This saves on the need for a lot of coding.

PHP based -

Don’t worry, it is not that scary. The combination of HTML and PHP can create a highly customized blog. Especially for those who like to dig around in the code, PHP driven software can provide a valuable learning experience.

Links -

Is the software able to manage links? Maintaining links manually in HTML is a tedious task. Any software that makes this easier is at a definite advantage.

Posts and Pages -

If you are familiar with blogs, you know that an entry in a blog is commonly known as a post. Can regular pages be created from the software as well? This allows for ultimate flexibility.

Content Management -

Can the software control elements for most or all of the website? Now, most blog software is not meant to accomplish this task. Search around and see if the blog software can be used to be a basic content management system. Some software is incredibly flexible and can accomplish this task.

Choosing the right blog software for your new blog requires that you ask yourself some questions and make a list of all of the features and tools you need as well as your budget. Tip #7 Categorize

Another great tool you will want in your blog software is the ability to categorize. You want to keep your blogs organized and in categories, if you have them, so this option is really a great one for most bloggers.

Microsoft Corp. says that the next version of its Windows operating system will have built-in support for RSS, an increasingly popular way to get news and other information channeled straight to a computer.

RSS, short for Really Simple Syndication, hasn’t broken into widespread use yet, but the world’s largest software maker believes it will become a mainstay.

“We really believe that RSS is key to how people will be using the Internet in the future,” said Megan Kidd, a Windows product manager.

In the long-delayed Windows upgrade, code-named Vista and expected to be released late next year, an RSS icon will appear in the Internet Explorer Web browser to make it easy for people to find, much like Apple Computer Inc. has done with its Safari browser.

Vista will store all data downloaded to a computer via RSS in a single place. It will maintain a central list of all of a computer user’s RSS subscriptions, from Web log entries to photos pulled from an online family picture gallery.

It will include a feature called simple list extensions that will let Web sites use RSS to publish lists of content that users can subscribe to, like a weekly run-down of chart-topping songs or an online gift registry.

Microsoft will make the list extensions technology available for free through a “creative commons” license, which lets the company retain some intellectual property rights while encouraging broader use of the technology.

Joe Wilcox, an analyst with Jupiter Research, said Microsoft’s foray into RSS is reminiscent of its rush to capture its share of the burgeoning Web browser market in the mid-1990s.

“With the World Wide Web, we had this vast informational system that came along where Windows was not required,” Wilcox said. “That posed a potentially serious threat to Microsoft’s Windows franchise. They responded by making Internet Explorer part of the operating system.”

Microsoft may argue that its RSS push is about improving technology for developers, content providers and consumers, Wilcox said, but “it’s also, I believe, responding to a potential competitive threat.”

Having RSS built into Vista could pose a serious threat to companies that sell RSS readers that siphon data from the Internet. But Kidd contends that Microsoft isn’t out to put anyone out of business.

– What Is A Blog

A blog (or web log as what originally called) is the modern day equivalent of a journalÃ-think ëcaptains log stardateÃ-’ and you’re heading in the right direction.

A blog is an online publication about a subject or subjects that interest you. You could write (blog) your thoughts and ideas about your favourite movies, you could log your daily activities, you could even write about your hobby.

Today advanced blogs can include more than just words ñ now they can include audio as well as pictures. You can even blog from your mobile phone if you care too!

Creating and Writing Your Blog

So how do you create a blog? The easiest way to start is to use Google’s Blogger.com system. Simply visit www.blogger.com and follow the prompts ñ they provide step by step instructions and you’ll be blogging in less time than it takes to boil an egg!

Blogger.com will allow you create a free blog and they’ll even let you host it at no charge too! Remember, a blog is published “out there” on the Internet so it has to live somewhere and the free hosting environment from Blogger.com is called Blogspot.

Writing (some people calling it ëblogging’) to your blog is even easier than creating it. You can either use the built in publishing features provided by Blogger or you can use the ëBlogThis’ button included with the Google toolbar. Again, complete instructions about how to blog your blog (now that’s a mouthful!) are included at the Blogger.com site and the Google.com toolbar page.

– Monetizing Your Blog

But unless you are into sharing your thoughts for free, you want to know how to make some money ñ AND ñ share your thoughtsÃ- right?

In a word, if you have focused blog traffic (readers) then that stream of people passing by has monetary potential. Your readers have the potential to spend money, the potential to click on a link, and potential to turn all your hard work into money ñ here’s how: TRAFFICÃ-

– Adsense (Google)

Simply put, this program devised by Google, puts a context sensitive advert in front of your viewers. If you’re blog is all about golf balls, then the adverts that you show will be about golf balls.

And when someone sees the advert and clicks on it you make money. How much you make depends on how much the click is worth (see the Adsense reporting data in your Adsense account for that info) and how many times the advert is clicked. As you can see, this is numbers game ñ the more traffic you get the more clicks you’ll get the money you make.

– Affiliate Sales

Another way to capitalize on your blog traffic is to offer the readers more than just advertising ñ offer them solutions.

If your blog is all about golf balls then it might be a safe bet that the reader plays golf. If they play golf then they probably want (like most golfers) to improve their swing or their short game, or any number of golfing challenges.

Well doesn’t it make sense to offer them these solutions from within your blog? Of course it does. And you do this by promoting other peoples products and solutions. When your reader clicks on one of these promotional links and chooses to buy the product, you get a slice of the sale proceeds ñ in some cases up to 75%

Now this might sound complex but it’s not. There are many affiliate programs on the Internet ñ simply type ëaffiliate programs’ into Google and you’ll see what I mean. However, for my money the leader (at the time of writing this) was www.ClickBank.com

This company (like all good online companies) offers you plenty of valuable information about how to sell and promote other peoples products and make money. Afterall, your blog did all the work and got the traffic ñ why not turn that traffic into money too?

– Search (Google)

You just read about Google’s Adsense program, well guess what ñ they have a search element to that program. Basically you can add a Google search box to your blog and when someone searches from your blog Google takes not of this and you are credited for any sales that result from your ëassistance’. Again, the Google adsense program contains all the nitty gritty details so check them out.

– Other Affiliate & Joint Venture Ideas

By now you should be getting the idea ñ TRAFFIC equals MONEY. So get creative with your blog. If you’ve got the readers then think of ways to offer them other products and services.

Here are a few other ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

– Ebay

Let’s go back to our example from earlier ñ golf. If you’ve got readers wanting to get information on Golf then why not offer them the chance to get highly focused golfing products from Ebay?

Did you know that you can become an EBay affiliate? Well you can, and when someone registers to join Ebay or someone buys something from Ebay you will get a portion of the sale proceeds.

Again, TRAFFIC equals MONEY.

– Paydotcom

Although Clickbank.com has been the leader for digital product sales and affiliate marketing, a new player has come on the scenes ñ www.PayDotCom.com

I know, that name is a real mouthful, but they seem to have a lot going for them. They too also have a great affiliate program and can provide you with great ideas for products to offer your readership.

– Blog Promotion & Marketing Strategies

You’ve likely heard this a hundred timesÃ-if you build it they will come. Well I’ve got news for youÃ-they won’t!

Not unless they can find you, and of course, not unless you offer them something relevant and useful (which you are doing by publishing a blog on your chosen subject.)

So how do we get the readers to find you ñ here are a few of the major ways:

– Blog Directory Updates

When you set up your blog (if you are using Blogger) you can tell the system to notify the blog directory when any changes occur. This means that people (who are watching the directory) will know when your blog has changed.

You should also ensure that your blog is set as PUBLIC so that it will be made available to the entire world. No good keeping it a secret if you want visitors!

Incidentally, when the Internet was young (circa 1994) the free websites and free hosting solutions were ignored by the major search engines. The thinking behind this was as follows ñ if you cannot afford the low cost of hosting then you were not serious and so they figured why bother including you.

These days, hosting and websites are so cheap to obtain that they’ve become a commodity and now that elitist mentality has gone. The free sites are now included in the search engines. And I should point out that Google owns Blogger so they’re a supporter.

– Pinging

One of the neat features of blogs is the ability to syndicate the content. Syndicating the content simply means that people interested in content like you have on your blog, can be notified and presented with the information when it becomes available.

Now don’t worry about the technical details, just know that there is a way to do this and for the most part it’s call RSS.

If you want to get major search engine to pick up your blog and index it in a hurry, then the current tactic is to add your blogs RSS or XML specs to your Yahoo RSS feed list.

It’s a bit beyond the scope of this document, however it is straightforward enough. Simply log into your Yahoo account and click on the edit button under RSS feeds ñ add your blogs feed address and that’s it.

If you’ve kept the defaults from within Blogger then your RSS feed will be called: http://your-blog-name.blogspot.com/atom/xml

– Press Release

Press and media releases aren’t just for big companies ñ they’re for you too. The simplest way to approach this is to use a free PR distribution service like www.preweb.com

I’ve used them many times in the past with fantastic results ñ of course you still need to write a good press/media release but PRWeb really comes through after that.

PRWeb is free to use (although you can donate to upgrade features if you wish) and provides ample examples and a complete step by step guide to follow.

Simply get yourself a free account, write yourself a release (using their easy-to-follow guidelines) and submit it. Just remember to include your blog name and it’s web address so that the search engines can index it accordingly.

– UseNet, Forums & Discussion Boards

If your blog contains meaningful and useful information then you should take a little time and visit the various resources all over the web that would like to know about your blog.

Check out the newsgroups, the discussion forums and anything else you can find related to your chosen subject. It will take a little time at first but you will get the hang of it very quickly.

Just remember to be courteous when you post anything. Blatant advertising and commercial messages are often frowned upon so be sensitive to that. It’s generally acceptable to include a short bio box or signature at the end of your email or message posting so be sure to include a brief description and link to your blog.

Remember, add value and don’t be pushy.

– What’s Next?

Well as the shampoo bottles like to say “rinse and repeat”

This will take a while to gain momentum and the search engines can be a little slow at picking up the thread ñ the trick here is persistence. Which shouldn’t pose a problem for you since you’re blogging on a subject that interests you anyhow?

Here are a few passing thoughts to get you excited.

It’s very easy to earn $10 to $50 a day with this technique ñ once the traffic has begun flowing. Remember, TRAFFIC equals MONEY. These numbers are very conservative because I don’t want you thinking this is some get-rich-quick thing.

Sure you can earn more, I know people making at least $100 a day, but this system works as a function of the effort you put into it. You will need to create a valuable blog. You will need to write meaningful and useful content. If you throw up some shoddy link farm or inappropriate content you will be rewarded accordingly.

By now, if you haven’t heard of Blogging, you must be in a coma,
seldom watch or listen to the news, or never use the internet. Bloggers
are the newest and most popular ëauthentic’ voice on the internet.

Blogging Defined

First, let’s begin with an accurate definition of Blogging. Blog is short for Web Log. To blog is to upload text onto the same place on the internet
daily, weekly, monthly, or at least with some predictable frequency. The
best bloggers are trained professional writers, people who write
because it’s their passion, and politically inclined individuals who need
a bully pulpit for their ideas. Some bloggers are traveling long distance
over an extended period of time, and they want to communicate with
family and friends. The traveling bloggers do not have enough time to e-
mail everyone ñ so they blog. Family and friends can check their blog
for updates on their whereabouts, their adventures, mishaps, and
golden opportunities while they’re on the road.

Is Blog a Noun, Verb, or Adjective?

I have seen Blog used as a noun, verb and adjective. This means
blogging is a thing, an active principle, and a way to describe
something. If you want to blog (verb) and do it well, the best advice is to
blog on a subject you know quite a good deal about. Chances are, most
people who blog with a good solid background in their subject area, do
not readily run out of good material. Also, people who read blogs (noun)
constructed in this way will walk away enriched, educated on a
particular subject, and are more likely to return.

Blogging as Gossip or for Profits

As a professional writer and a creative writer, I am enjoying the
popularity of the blogger (noun). Why? Because bloggers are bringing
back respect for the individual voice in writing. Their popularity is
sometimes based upon the depth of their knowledge on a particular
subject. Or, as in the case of bloggers who helped reveal the true
identity of White House Press Corps gay hustler Jeff Gannon, bloggers
can turn a little vicious gossip into an international news story, which I
personally find amusing and enlightening. Since bloggers uncovered
this scandalous man’s double life, blogging has gained a great deal of
attention. In fact, marketing and public relations firms are now using
blogging as a tool in their whole package of increasing a client’s media
visibility.

Public Relations and Marketing Blogging

If the Public Relations and Marketing firms gain a stronghold on
blogging activities, perhaps the ëauthentic’ individual voice that began
the blogging craze will be lost in the rubble. This is the worry of many
devoted bloggers. Or, maybe this trend could strengthen the position of
political or gossip oriented bloggers. Perhaps the ëdevoted bloggers’
who were working in the restaurant and retail industry, will now find
they’re being offered the opportunity to blog for money instead of slave
away over a hot grill, or at a cash register.

This is where the whole blogging debate takes over.

Ethical versus Unethical Blogging

Who actually has the ëright’ to blog? What does an authentic blogger
look and feel and sound like? How do you identify a slick, Public
Relations blogger? Should blogging remain in the realm of the
individual voice? Or will it be usurped by multinational corporations and
governments for their own devious purposes? These are all valid
questions, and I’m afraid I do not possess an answer to any of these
ethical questions about blogging. I feel that the individual person,
company, or entity must answer these questions on their own. But there
is one thing I am absolutely certain about. Everyone has a right to blog,
just as every one has a right to write and publish their work in the public
sphere, which includes the internet.

Earlier this month, Realtor Magazine announced that they would be featuring an article about Tampa Bay Realtor John Mudd and the success he has been having in attracting prospects and media attention with his blog on real estate.

Since then, many others in the Real Estate market have been curious about how to implement similar strategies to capture leads in their areas.

This article is part of a series that provides insight to the unique ways that the strategy of blogging and the use of RSS and/or Atom feeds can be applied as part of your web promotion strategy.

1. Capture better search engine positioning for your local market with a blog.

By now it’s apparent that blogs with unique content can bring you better search engine rankings. This advantage is strengthened when you use a blog software tool that enables you to publish posts on your own server, which we’ll go over in more detail in part two of this article series.

RSS and Blogs bring you special web promotional opportunities that can help your blog and the site where it resides rank higher in search engines, due in part to the way they are organized. Particularly for narrow local markets, this can both widen and deepen your audience within 3 – 8 weeks with proper implementation.

By far, this is not the only benefit of blogging or RSS – though if you’re looking for better organic search engine ranking across a multitude of keyword phrases, this just may be the answer for you.

2. Dominate your local niche by becoming a resource for information for home buyers and sellers in your area

The ease of publishing content to a blog, coupled with one of the easier ways to implement RSS, its accompanying feed, gives you the ability to provide fresh and relevant information, often at the same rate of time it would take to write a short email.

With the proper blog publishing system, the speed at which you can now provide information means that you can publish updates more often, drawing more attention to your web site from search engines and visitors alike.

After landing in your blog, links to other relevant parts of your site can draw visitors to the areas you most want them to pay attention to, such as your updated listings – which can also be made available via RSS if you so choose.

Why RSS?

It can mean 100% delivery of your message to your prospects, in a fashion that they choose to have pulled to them. Rather than attempting to digest all the information at your blog in one visit, they can skim your headlines, read a summary or post, and then click through to your site upon finding information that draws them in.

You can supplement this with email for users who are more comfortable with receiving your information the traditional way.

While promotion and updates via email are not necessarily to be discounted, the use of RSS and other feed formats lend themselves to additional promotional possibilities.

3. Have yet another reason to remind prospects to return to your site – and shorten the sales cycle using a multiple feed strategy

With the combined power of blogging and RSS, you can construct multiple outlets for information that are each hyper-targeted to several segments of your market. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” It’s a format that
web sites and blogs can use to send updated headlines to you via
services like My Yahoo!. My Yahoo! gathers the content you

There is not much of difference between personal and business blogs visually but there is a fine difference between them in terms of reputation and brand attached.

Business blogs should be well planned before hand. Companies can’t afford to just walk away after launching their blog. Business blog has to be successful. Constant and consistent posts are the rule of the game. Blogsphere is full of best writers and faster one learns their rule, better for them. Companies can’t just rely on the fact that they are market leaders in their business so they will be successful with their blogs too.

The postings on business blog should be open and should portray personality of the writer and the company. The postings on business blogs should be very informal, and should be written in first person voice. Posts should be informative and relevant with an expert touch to it.

If you’re an Internet marketer, you need a blog, because:

One: A blog helps your site to rank higher in the search engines

In 2003, when Google bought Pyra Labs, the company which developed Blogger, the reaction was Huh? At the time, blogs were seen by most as online journals, primarily maintained by the demented and teenage girls.

How times change. In 2005, companies small and large are using blogs to promote their businesses. This is because Google and the other search engines love blogs because of their constantly updated content.

Blog often, and you’ll get more visitors and a good search engine ranking.

Two: A blog expands your customer base ñ you’ll reach people you could reach in no other way

A blog helps you to reach people you can reach in no other way because your frequent updates mean that you’ll automatically get niche visitors ñ those people who have no clue about you or the product that you’re selling, but who happened to type in a search engine query that mentioned words you used in a single post.

Those niche visitors can become buyers, and this means that you don’t need to struggle to get top listings in any search engine. Write (or link to) quality content, and your visitors will find you.

Three: A blog helps your site to differentiate itself

A blog is a form of stealth marketing. Therefore a blog doesn’t need to be about the products you’re selling. A blog can be about any topic that you’re passionate about. Blog about your passion, and mention ñ in passing ñ the products you’re selling. You can also link to them, but don’t bother selling heavily ñ that’s not what a blog is about.

Four: Like a diamond, a blog is forever

Although the most-visited blogs update often, some of them several times a day, that doesn’t mean that you have post more often than you can fit into your schedule. Your permalinks (see below) mean that since your blog items are standalone pages, they’re indexed by search engines in the same way that any HTML or other page is indexed ñ your blog items/ pages will continue to bring traffic even if you don’t update very often.

Five: A blog attracts new opportunities

A blog makes your business visible. Your stealth marketing efforts will attract the attention of people who may become joint venture partners, or who will have other opportunities for you.

The time and energy that you invest in your blog can bring results beyond your wildest expectations. Create a blog ñ it’s your hardest-working, and most cost-effective online marketing option.

Literature is the soul of the wit. The best source of literature can be now found in blogs. The growing trend of  blogmania’ is slowly sweeping the netizens. Every person aspires to have a blog as a platform to publish his thoughts and be heard and read.

General surveys undertaken on blogs and bloggers shows a rising trend in blogging. A parallel platform for literary endeavor, the blogs are overthrowing the traditional journalistic norms. Publishing of news and views no longer remains the privilege of an elite minority. Anybody and everybody is free to get in touch and explore the writer within himself. The anamorphic nature of the human soul is best reflected in the blogs.

A survey in the United States brought out a startling fact the 30% of the surveyed people read blogs. Also, 52% of the surveyed people advocate equal journalistic rights and freedom for the blogs. And the most striking fact is that 31% of the surveyed people revealed that they found blogs to be more credible than the newspapers.

The growing popularity of blogs can be gauzed from the fact that Yahoo, Google, MSN, Rediff and all the other bigwigs of the cyber world are experimenting with blogs and bloggers. Both free and paid blog hoisting sites have come up which offers a plethora of tools to make blogging a breeze.

MSN has even gone to the extent of making a common ‘passport’ database across all its services. So now, a MSN user can use his own personal ‘id’ across MSN messenger, Spaces and hotmail. Also, MSN has integrated its Spaces with MSN Messenger 7.0. The users of MSN Messenger 7.0 will have a tab labeled ‘gleams’ which will inform them when their contacts have updated their individual blogs.

Recent statistics from MSN shows that MSN has 170,000 daily blog updates. This number is huge considering the fact that most of the bloggers do not update their blogs on a daily basis.

The Literature of the new era is no longer limited to books. From Poems to Features, from Humor to Short Stories, everything can be found in the blogs.

Though good blogs are a trifle to find, yet close scrutiny will reveal every blog to be good in its own personal aspect. After all, blogs are a slice of the blogger’s life and every one’s life is a good source of learning experience.

This also opens up the teaching value of blogs. Blogs can be a mirror of life, culture and society. What can be a better teacher than one with a plethora of experiences to offer on a silver platter?

In 1999 I asked my friends and colleagues if they blogged. The responses I received ranged from odd looks to questions about the blogging practice. The end results of my findings was “Blog” was a new term and not highly recognized. That was then, a half million blog users ago.

Blogs have become and I do believe will continue into their plight of greatness for sometime, until a new technology slides into place. For the time being, blogs are a great way to define who you are to your visitors and provide dynamic content that the search engines go nuts over.

Clogged email boxes and spam eaters have taken a dramatic effect on the once powerful email marketing tool. As email marketing loses its effect, marketers and small businesses are seeking ways to fulfill this lost art of communication between staff and customers. Blogging could be that much needed answer for you.

SO what is a blog?

Blogs are a time and date stamped, easy to search, web based journal or self publishing tool. Blogs can have a corporate style, but in most cases are written by one person in a relaxed, candid atmosphere. True personality usually shines threw in the opinions of the blog writer. You do not have to be a writer to produce a blog. Even so, many blogs owners become recognized as small journalists, as the writer speaks their mind or offers self analyzed materials on their preferred subject matters.

You may think at this point, that a blog does not sound like a business tool.

Let’s take blogging into a business approach and see how we can benefit.
